The cocktail dress (french robe de cocktail) Christian Dior owes its name to the late 1940s for an elegant dress, which is worn in the early evening, for the hour of cocktail or aperitifs.
The dinner dress is much stricter and more elegant than the cocktail dress. Occasions are usually festive meals or receptions, also during the day. A dinner dress has long or 3/4 sleeves, the shiny (usually black) fabric gives it the extravagant touch.
The cocktail dress is less elegant than a dinner dress. It is made of slightly flowing, festive fabrics, has a small décolleté and is as long as the calf. Occasion: informal receptions or cocktail parties.
